Evelyn Ellis is a Paraeducator k-5th in communication behavior at Jason Lee Elementary for 21 years. She has been in the field of education for the Portland Public Schools for 24 years. She also works for an after school program at Jase Lee – Sun School as an instructor for “at risk youths” for the last 7 years. Ms. Ellis teaches severely autistic children, who have learning challenges. She uses teaching methods like, the iPad to help her students learn. teach her students. As one student is quoted as saying,” Ms. Ellis “Goes above and beyond as a teacher and staff member. She truly has a gift. Her dedication and compassion towards all students needs to be recognized. The children she works with excel and thrive after she has worked with them. This year she is working one on one with a student who had no communication, at the beginning of the school year. Three months in and this student is saying well over 30 words, and communicating his needs and not having to rely on a talker. Ms. Ellis truly loves her job and puts all her effort into making a difference in her children’s lives.”
Ms. Ellis received a scholarship through Portland Public Schools (PPS) called the Portland Paraeducator Opportunity Program (PPOP) though Portland Community College, receiving an Associates with honors while working at Jason Lee full time. She is a member of Phi Betta Kappa honor society.
Ms. Ellis have two outstanding grown children Timothy and Seanna and is a proud grandma to her amazing sweet grandson De Sean who is 5 years old and now attends Jason Lee Elementary as a kindergartner.
